What is LAP?
LAP stands for Lawyers Assistance Program. It is an informational, confidential referral and counselling service provided through the Lawyers' Insurance Associaton of Nova Scotia. LAP is designed to assist members or the legal profession, their staff and families who may be experiencing health or personal problems.

Why do Nova Scotia Lawyers need an assistance program?


Like anyone, lawyers who experience emotional or personal difficulties may be unable to resolve their problems on their own, and my find that their personal happiness, work performance or physical health is affected. Through LAP, they will receive assistance to find satisfactory solutions to their problems.

What types of problem does LAP deal with?


The source of a problem may be work-related or personal (family, marital, drug, alcohol or gambling).

When should I consider contacting LAP?


You might consider contacting LAP if you feel as though your problems, or those of someone you know, are becoming overwhelming and out of control. Some symptoms that can appear if emotons or problems get out of control include mood swings, sleeplessness, lack of appetite, poor concentraton, apathy, or anger.

After discussing the situation with the LAP Advisor, a referral can be made to an appropriate community agency or private counsellor qualifies to address the identfied concerns.

It is generally acknowledged that the sooner assistance begins, the more effective it will be.

How can I access LAP's services?


To get assistance, call 1 866 299 1299 from anywhere in Nova Scotia, 24 hours a day. You will not be asked to identify yourself.

Will my call be confidential?


Information is not provided to anyone or any organizaton without your permission. The issue of confidentiality can be discussed with the LAP Advisor to establish limits for support and protection. Your right to privacy is respected and strictly observed.Who will I speak with when I contact LAP? You will speak to the LAP Advisor. The LAP Advisor is an experienced counsellor who will carry out an assessment and, if necessary, refer you to outside counsellors for the assistance required. The LAP Advisor will also be able to refer you to an LAP volunteer for peer support. LAP's volunteers are members of the legal profession, many of whom have overcome personal difficulties and subsequently volunteered to help others.
